CASED PILES.

About Bored Piles

Cased piling is a variation of bored piling where steel casings are driven or drilled into the ground to stabilise the bore before drilling begins. Where standard bored piling requires ground that holds itself open, cased piling extends that capability to sites where upper material is unstable or water-charged, or too poor to bore without support.

The casing contains the bore, prevents collapse, and in some configurations protects the concrete from migrating into surrounding aggregate or waterways. Depending on site conditions and design requirements, casings can be temporary, sacrificial, or segmental.

Why choose apg

Three Casing Systems, One Contractor

Temporary, sacrificial, and segmental, APG carries and operates all three casing systems, selecting the right approach based on ground conditions, diameter, and project requirements.

APG’s segmental casing kit is available on our 40t- 180t rigs giving us the flexibility to deploy the right rig size for the job.

Our cased piling capability extends to 3,400m diameter, among the largest available in NSW. Making APG the contractor of choice for major bridge and infrastructure foundations.

From the Molonglo River Bridge Road widening through to the work we’ve performed on the HumeLink project. APG has a track record of delivering cased piling on complex, high-consequence projects.

90% of our fleet is under five years old. We retire ageing rigs and replace them with new equipment. Less downtime, more reliability on every site.

THE THREE CASING TYPES

Temporary Casings

Steel casings driven or rotated into the ground to stabilise the bore during drilling. Once the socket is complete, the cage is inserted, and concrete is poured, the casing is extracted and reused. Best suited to smaller diameters where extraction friction is manageable.

The casing is drilled in and left permanently in the ground, becoming part of the finished pile. Used where ground conditions are too unstable or water-charged for safe extraction, or where nearby services make vibration from extraction unacceptable.

Thick-walled casings (up to 40mm) installed in sections (typically 4m pieces) with a toothed shoe that breaks rock as it’s drilled down. Concrete is poured, and casings are removed incrementally, section by section, eliminating the friction and vacuum effects that make single-piece extraction difficult at large diameters. The preferred approach for bridges and major infrastructure.

PRIMARY APPLICATIONS & USE CASES

Unstable or Water-Charged Upper Ground

When poor material sits above hard rock, casing stabilises the upper section, allowing drilling to continue safely to the required toe depth.

When ground conditions would typically call for CFA, government specs often require cased bored piling instead, allowing full visual inspections of the base that CFA cannot provide.

Casings prevent concrete from migrating into the surrounding aggregate, waterways, or water infrastructure, a critical requirement on environmentally sensitive or service-adjacent sites.

With segmental casing capability up to 3,400mm diameter, APG can deliver cased piles for the most demanding bridge, infrastructure, and high-load foundation requirements.
